How to Cook Basmati Rice in the Microwave Oven
Quick and easy
This is a basic recipe for plain white basmati rice.
1 cup basmati rice
2 cups filtered water
1/3 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon coconut oil ( or oil of your choice)
Soak the rice for ten to fifteen minutes. Wash and drain about three or four times until water runs clear. Add in the salt and oil and mix well. Add in the filtered water and stir again. Place in the microwave oven uncovered and set the power on high and cook for ten minutes. Check at the eight or nine minute mark to make sure it does not dry out. Every microwave is different. Remove from the oven and fluff with a fork to see if it’s evenly cooked.
Some brands of rice cook faster than others. If it’s still not cooked fluff and turn over with a fork, sprinkle about two to three tablespoons of water, cover and cook for another three minutes or so, on high. Remove it from the microwave, it should be done perfectly by now. Rice is a very versatile dish and accompanies well with just about any entree, vegetarian or non-vegetarian. On it’s own it’s a plain and simple gluten-free vegetarian dish.
Most times one cup of rice takes exactly ten minutes. This is a new brand and seems to take longer. Sometimes the microwave cooks unevenly and that’s why I like fluffing with a fork to make sure that there are areas of the dish that has no dry grains. If so sprinkle some water and keep covered to rehydrate it. Because of the different brands of rice and microwaves cooking times may vary slightly. Coconut milk keeps the grains separate and fills this dish with an amazing aroma keeping the grains light and fluffy.
